Therapy

I combine several therapeutic models for a holistic approach to mental health treatment

Internal Family Systems (IFS)

IFS states that our inner world is made up of different parts, which provides a helpful and elegant model to understand our inner system. Having different internal parts or modes is a natural and normal occurrence that doesn’t represent a pathology or disorder. For a simple example, we may have a part that wants to go to the gym but another that needs to relax. On a more impacting level, we may have a part of us that hold significant anger and other parts that hold guilt and shame because of the anger.
In IFS, all parts are playing an important role and have good intentions in our system, even if the outcome is problematic (panic, anxiety, anger etc). Instead of fighting or criticising parts in extreme roles, IFS seeks to support them by healing the core issues they are protecting from. With core healing comes balance and unity within our inner world
Depending on the presentation and client preference, I may also incorporate EMDR into the treatment plan.

Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR)

EMDR started as a treatment for PTSD in the late 1980’s. Since then it has been extensively researched and developed to target various forms of trauma. EMDR uses bilateral stimulation to re-process distressing memories that are related to presenting symptoms.

In this model, a presenting symptom or issue is thought to have an underlying memory connected to it. Symptoms keep occurring because the memory is “frozen” or “unprocessed” in the brain. EDMR uses bilateral stimulation to activate the brains natural healing centre to process distressing memories and alleviate associated symptoms or problems. I will typically use EMDR for single-incident traumas and other indications.

Using IFS and EMDR together gives us a powerful, trauma-based model to heal many different presentations seen in therapy.
